The BREA field school is a UNH-managed program. This 4-credit intensive field course involves hands-on training in the jungles of Belize. The field course is primarily aimed at training undergraduate students in all aspects of field survey and mapping and focuses on the recording of ancient Maya archaeological sites in the lower Belize River Watershed. Students rotate through teams and also get exposure to field excavation techniques and lab work. Students contribute to original data collection for an ongoing archaeological research project and document sites that have not been previously recorded archaeologically. On this field program, students don’t just learn about archaeology, they learn how to be an archaeologist.
